Additional information

The apartment looks just on Largo di Torre Argentina, the most extensive complex from the republican period that is still visible. The remains of the four temples, which date from the 4th to the 2dn centuries A.C., are not imposing for their size, but interesting for their architectural form and age. On the Piazza del Gesù stands the Chiesa del Gesù, a prototype of the Counterreformation church, built in 1568-1584 following a design by Vignola, its interior features the Baroque chapel of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, with its precious niche covered in lapislazuli and statues of the saint and angels, originally in silver, but today in silver stucco. The Fountain of the Tortoises, in little Piazza Mattei is one of the most charming in Rome, its beauty and gracious lines led people to believe that this artistic jewel of the late 16th century had been designed by Raphael. In this strategical position you can enjoy lively nights in Campo de’Fiori and the class and elegance of anything surrounding Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, and you can also enjoy what is offered to you by the Ghetto, the ancient jewish district, just behind Largo di Torre Argentina. You can’t miss the famous carciofi alla giudia (artichokes coked at the jewish manner) and the sweets of the most ancient bakery of the city! At 1 via Portico d’Ottavia Boccione, confectioner since ninety years, bakes in the same small shop all the typical jewish sweets: first of all the sweet pizza filled with raisins, pine-kernels and candied fruit. The Saturday brioches, the kallà, the kranz, with candied fruit salad, cakes with ricotta cheese and chocolate and, above all, bruscolini (salted pumpkin seeds) warm and salted at any time.
Absolutely to visit is the Portico d’Ottavia, real jewel of the ancient art. It was built by August in the place of the more ancient Portico d Metello, between the 27 an the 23 b.C., and dedicated to his sister Ottavia. Damaged by fire in 80 and in 191, it was remade by Settimio Severo (203). The remains you can see now mostly belong to this time. It was a quadriportico of mt 119 x 132,with one nave in the front and two side aisles, including the temples of Juno and Iovis, the Curia and two libraries, greek and latin.
