Additional information
L’Escala is a traditional town and fishing port on this unspoilt part of the Costa Brava. It’s the perfect base for year round sunshine, secluded bays, coastal walks and archaeological sites. While you are here you really should take a trip to the wonderful city of Barcelona but there are also other things we would recommend all within half an hour's drive away or less.
The Ruins of Empuries: Site of the first Greek Colony in Spain set up in 600BC. It is close to the charming village of Sant Marti d’Empuries which has wonderful beaches and views of the Bay of Roses and several good restaurants – a great pit stop after visiting the Greek and Roman ruins. In summer a little open air train runs from L’Escala to Sant Marti and then back to Montgo a beautiful bay and also a must see at the other end of town. They run all day and late into the night and you can hop on and off at various locations.
Other medieval villages and towns not to be missed: Girona – 45 minute drive (walk around on top of the town’s historic wall and visit the Jewish Quarter), Figueres – 25 minute drive(Museum of Dali), and less than half an hour to Torroella de Montgri, Pals, Begur and Castell Platja D’Aro to name but a few!
Cadaques. If you only have time for one further afield trip you must go to Cadaques. Little more than a whitewashed village around a rocky bay, but the surrounding area has a special magic fusion of wind, sea, light and rock that made it one of Salvador Dali’s favourite places to stay and paint. The beaches are small and pebbly but their picturesqueness and beautifully blue waters make up for that.
Open air markets: Visiting a lively and buzzing market is a must – and you will find one or more on every day of the week all close by: Sunday (L’Escala and Roses), Monday (Torroella de Montgri), Tuesday (Girona), Wednesday (Begur), Thursday (Figueres), Friday (La Bisbal), Saturday (Girona and Empuria Brava).
Diving or snorkelling: Around the Illes Medes in close by L’Estatit the shores and waters around these seven islets have been protected as an underwater natural reserve making it one of Spain’s most popular diving destinations. There is a big bird population too. Kiosks by the harbour in L’Estatit offer snorkelling and glass-bottomed boat trips to the islands. Kenna Ecodiving offer try-dives and courses between the Medes islands and L’Escala. Call Ray Kenna on 972772746.
Swimming: The long sandy Blue Flag beach at Riells, 10 minutes walk away, is the most popular beach and the promenade has a huge number of restaurants, bars and tourist shops. You can hire pedalos, sail, windsurf or jetski. The old town has two small beaches. If you want a bit more space and less people follow the coastal path towards Sant Marti for more than half a dozen beautiful bays surrounded by pine woods. Walk further on to a wide sandy beach which stretches for miles for windsurfing and paragliding. Part of this stretch has been identified as a nudist beach.
Bird watching: as well as the nudist beach there is the Parc Natural Dels Aiguamolls de L’Emporda: this natural park preserves the remnants of marshes that once covered the whole coastal plain of the Gulf of Roses. It’s an important site for migrating birds – nearly 100 species a day arrive between March and May and August and October. You may even see the occasional flamingo, glossy ibis, spoonbill or rare black stork. 6 Kms south of Sant Pere Pescador.
Golf: A new breed of discerning tourist is rediscovering the Costa Brava. Very few people know the real Costa Brava and the lifestyle the Catalans enjoy here. Golfers traveling to courses situated in the Baix and Alt Emporda countryside are exploring untouched territories. What they find is beautiful countryside, peace and tranquility, along with outstanding Catalan restaurants set inside ancient Masias (farmhouses). In the last decade the Costa Brava has become host to nine excellent golf courses (not a bad one amongst them) four of which are some of the best in Europe. Costa Brava golf courses are rapidly becoming known as Spain’s best golfing destination. Those closest include Pals, Peralada, Girona, Gualta and Emporda. The Costa Brava has a climate that’s perfect for golf. Along the coastline, the region usually enjoys year-round bright, sunny and mild weather with an average yearly temp of 16 degrees centigrade. It’s protected by the Pyrenees Mountains in the north and the warm Mediterranean to the east. A warm jet stream helps keep the region pleasantly bright and mild during the winter. Shirt- sleeves golf in November and February is not uncommon. In the height of summer, temperatures are warm but cool breezes off the sea keep playing golf comfortable.
Cycling: The Costa Brava has an extensive network of rural paths far from the main roads and suitable for travel by bicycle. Taking advantage of these paths and local roads, the District Council has created a cycletouring network whose perfect signposting means that the district’s landscapes can be admired peacefully and each of the heritage assets they lead to known. Most of the network runs across the plain, though there are links by path and road to the coastal zones of the Aro Valley and the Palafrugell corridor. Notable in the south of the district is the rehabilitation as a cycle path of the old railway line which used to run between Sant Feliu de Guíxols and Girona and can be picked up just outside of L’Escala. Bikes can be hired at several locations in the town.
Festivals: Combining religious ceremony with surprisingly large doses pf pagan ritual, each Costa Brava town's Festa Major involves noisemerrymaking and plenty of dancing. Many include traditions such as the gegants (giants), originally mascots for craftsmen's guilds -pairs of effigies up to 12m tall (a king and queen, or shepherd and shepherdess) swirling through the streets, attended by the capgrossos (bigheads), smaller effigies with oversized caricature heads. Fire plays a significant role, especially around Sant Joan's Eve on June 23, when bonfires are lit and spectacular fireworks festival in Blanes. Setmana Santa (easter) is marked by elaborate and colourful processions, while Carnestoltes (Carnival), in February, is a frenzy of pure hedonism. Many towns, including L’Escala, stage music festivals throughout the summer. The more established ones in L’Escala, Torroella de Montgri and Peralada attract some big names. All through the year, you are likely to stumble across the sardana, the traditional Catalan dance, being performed in the open. More stirring are the havaneres, sea shanties brought back from Cuba by sailors. Concerts are staged throughout the summer, top event being the stunning cantada d'havaneres festival held every June in Calella de Palafrugell near L’Escala. L’Escala also hosts its own very special festivals: the Festival of the Salt and The Festival of the Anchovy are very popular.
Music: Every July and August the grounds of Peralada's castle host a prestigious music and dance festival. The Peralada International Music Festival is organised, run and financed through a non profit-making Castell de Peralada Cultural Foundation. It is held in Perelada, a small village with 1.500 inhabitants situated in a fine setting not far from L’Escala between Figueres and the Costa Brava. It is a well-preserved medieval village, with a beautiful castle and Renaissance palace, whose gardens provide the venue for the Festival during the months of July and August. The Festival dates from 1987, and in 1992 it joined the European Festival Association. Cultural events are generally held in the open-air auditorium, seating 1.800 and in the gothic Church (Iglesia del Carmen) seating 400.
Sailing and watersports: As well as the marina in L’Escala and the many watersports available, for people who really like boats a visit to Empuriabrava close to L’Escala is a must. It is said Empuriabrava is the largest marina in the world. It is certainly a modern day Venice. Empuriabrava has an immense number of canals, where boat owners have their own private moorings in front of their houses. Empuriabrava was built on a swamp in 1968 (at that time still Ampuriabrava). Today the place covers an area of over 503 hectares, about 10 % of the total area is canals or ports, and this probably counts for the popularity of the resort. From the tiniest boat to the biggest cruising yacht, everything for the boat lover can be found here.
