Additional information
Lake City and the surrounding area
A 2.5 mile River Walk is right across the street from the Villas and borders the Lake through the City.
Lake Pepin is said to be one of the best areas for inland sailing in the world.
The coulees between the bluffs bring winds from various directions that converge on the 22 mile long lake.
Lake Pepin is the largest river lake on the Mississippi and at one time extended all of the way north to St. Paul.
The Mississippi River Valley we see today was carved bluff to bluff through the process of receding glacial waters.
At the south end of Lake Pepin, an enormous amount of water is forced through the river channel. It is this force, combined with the steady movement of water draining into the Mississippi River from two tributary Rivers which allow the waters around the lower end of the Lake to remain open throughout the cold winter months.
American Bald Eagles are drawn to the open waters where they can fish during the winter months.
Hundreds of Bald Eagles can be seen from November through March at various scenic pull off areas along the Great River Road and at the base of Lake Pepin, near Reads Landing.
Reads Landing is just 8 miles south, a scenic drive along the Lake that is said to be
one of the most beautiful in all of America.
Bring along your binoculars to view the multitude of birds that use the Pepin Valley as a migration corridor. All 4 seasons offer wonderful birding opportunities. Lake City hosts a birding and nature festival in May each year.
According to the American Birding Association, the Upper Mississippi Valley is a globally significant migratory corridor.
