Property description
Set high in the green hills of Tobago, Ambassador's House is the place to relax in comfort, unwind, and enjoy the laid-back pace of Caribbean life. It is a secluded family house in a wonderful location with panoramic views over both the Caribbean and the Atlantic. The Japanese influence apparent in its design helps to provide a calm peaceful atmosphere.
The garden is cultivated round the house and pool, and left as forest lower down the hill making a small wildlife sanctuary. As well as an abundance of different birds and butterflies, in the forest there are iguanas, salamanders, lizards and squirrels, and one of our guests even saw a capuchin monkey. At night the frogs and cicadas call to each other creating a wonderfully exotic ambience.
The present house was built in the 1960’s on the old Concordia cocoa estate, by a former US ambassador to Japan who retired to Tobago after many years in the Far East. The old plantation house must have been built here in the late 18th or early 19th century from the evidence of bits and pieces of china and pottery we have dug up in the garden which have been dated in the UK as 1800 -1850.
Ambassador's House is on one level with a wide veranda running all around it, and being set on the top of a hill, not only does it catch the cooling breezes, but the views from here are spectacular, definitely some of the best on the island. The garden is full of mature trees: flame trees, palms, lime and grapefruit, also exotic fruit such as papaya, bananas and pineapples.
We have four guest bedrooms ( all with ceiling fans) two with en suite bathrooms and two sharing a bathroom. Click for layout diagram There are spacious living and dining rooms ( also with ceiling fans) and a well-equipped kitchen, with dishwasher, washing machine, 2 fridges and freezer. Telephone and fax are provided. Voltage is 112. The pool (unfenced) is 32’ by 16’, the deepest part being approximately 5’6”
Ambassador's House is a comfortable family house in extensive grounds, not a custom-built luxury villa in a holiday complex, and we offer people a unique opportunity to experience life in Tobago as visitors rather than tourists. Many of our guests have been back for return visits; once the relaxed way of life in Tobago, and at Ambassador's House in particular gets into your system it is hard to get it out !
We have a resident maid (in self-contained accommodation) who will welcome you on your arrival. She keeps the house clean and tidy and, by arrangement with guests, will cook, shop or babysit whenever required. For additional night-time security we also have a nightwatchman. Trips to the rain forest, golf course or diving school, and sailing, fishing and snorkelling can all be organised.
Although secluded, Ambassador's House is not isolated, distances are all short on Tobago, 20 minutes to the airport, 10 to Scarborough, 10 to the nearest beach, 5 to the nearest store. Car hire can be arranged here in England, and guests are met at the airport and escorted to the house. There the fridges will be stocked with whatever food and drinks you want, and the dinner you have ordered will await you.

Additional information
‘Tobago, a little, tranquil island 21 miles northeast of Trinidad and part of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago was connected to the South American mainland thousands of years ago. The island is an Eden that tourism has only just begun to touch……………… Reefs and rainforests, lagoons and waterfalls are home to some 210 species of bird and 123 different butterflies. There are some 30 reefs surrounding the island where all manner of fish and underwater flora abound.’ (Culinaria the Caribbean Discovery, Parkinson R)
Tobago is a well-known diving location: there are Manta Rays and giant coral in the Angel Reef off Little Tobago, and the famous Bucco Reef off Pigeon Point hosts a multitude of fish and underwater gardens. There are several reputable dive schools on the island.
The Mount Irvine Golf course is a well-established venue for international competitions, and enjoyable for players of any standard, with Mount Irvine Bay adjacent for a cooling dip after the 18th hole. Tobago now boasts a brand-new 18-hole golf course at the Hilton hotel which is proving popular with the many enthusiasts who visit the island.

Trips and Outings
Up the coast road on the Atlantic side of the island at Richmond is the Richmond Great House, formerly a Plantation House, now a guest house, it is very beautiful, inside and out, and well worth a stop for a drink in the little bar on your way to Speyside.
There are several little restaurants at Castara, on the Caribbean side of the island where you can have a fresh chicken or fish lunch and drinks near the sea, very simple but enjoyable. At Englishman’s Bay Eula at the food stall serves roti.
Beach bar on Castara Bay
Beach bar at Little Bacolet Bay
The Arnos Vale hotel near Plymouth serves afternoon tea at 4pm (expensive) and you can watch a good selection birds come to be fed. There are a lot of hummingbirds there and a hotel parrot. Snorkelling off the beach there is very good.
David Rookes the naturalist takes guided tours into the rain forest, for details his phone number is in our phone book. He gives a lecture on local wildlife every Tuesday at the Turtle Beach Hotel at 5pm. Peter Cox is another good local naturalist, lives quite close by and will organize trips to suit you; his phone number is in our book, Lesleyann can contact him for you.
The start of the Rainforest hike
Rainforest hikes
Sailing trips can be arranged with a large catamaran operating out of Pigeon Point, or a smaller sailing boat from Mount Irvine Bay. A motor boat makes day trips up the coast to take people snorkelling and fishing, and this has been highly recommended by guests. (contact numbers in our phone book) . Glass bottomed boats run out of Bucco to visit the reef for snorkelling which is very good there, or from Speyside to visit the Angel Reef. There are several diving schools on the island, the best ones are at the eastern end of the island next to the Blue Waters Inn, or at the Speyside Inn. Information available at Windy Edge. Fishing trips leave from Store Bay, but some will pick up from the house.

A trip to the Argyle Waterfall is well worth doing. It is about 45 mins’ drive up the road towards Speyside. You will see the sign to the waterfall just before you get to Roxborough. Leave your car in the carpark where you will find a government guide to escort you to the falls. Take swimming things as you can have a lovely swim in the pool under the waterfall.
