Additional information
The Neighborhood
Officially Eastside, the house is in the area know as Commercial Drive, "The Drive" considered Vancouver’s ‘Little Italy’ with its cosmopolitan mix of Trendy through Bohemian to Grunge and Punk residents and visitors. Located just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Downtown it provides a more gentle, quieter way of life, but offers easy access to Downtown and most other areas of interest.
The immediate area has local individually owned convenience shops, grocery stores, Pubs and Restaurants, also a Supermarket, Banks, Drug and a Dollar store. Further away on the Drive, towards 1st Avenue, a plethora of coffee shops, a few clothing, and furniture stores and many more restaurants serving a variety of ethnic food. Good eats!
The whole area can be walked easily, nothing is very far away.
By car about 15 minutes to the city centre, 20 mins to the airport and Richmond, and about 35mins to/from the US Border. Whistler is 1.5 to 2 hours depending on weather and traffic. Snow tires or chains are required north of Squamish at certain times during the Winter.
Vancouver is a Metropolitan area, with a total population of just over 2 million people, consisting of several autonomous municipalities that offer many of the advantages of their big city neighbour. A stay in Vancouver offers you wide options for experiencing a mix of big-city amenities and laid-back cultural diversity. Throughout the whole area there is ample diversity in ethnic demographics - the non Anglo-Saxon/ Caucasian population is above 50%, and many have congregated in areas, creating a predominantly single ethnic area, with stores, restaurants, services and institutions specifically serving the needs of those communities. These areas also provide a focal point for those from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds to savour and experience something other than that which they are perhaps more used to in their everyday lives.
By North American standards, the city supports a fairly good public transit system which is quite comprehensive and gets you around the area with relative ease. The fare structure is flat rate based on time of travel within any fare zone, however an additional fare is collected if travel is into or through any adjacent fare zone during workweek travel times.
The area enjoys a temperate climate, and the location, with the ocean and mountains on the doorstep is second to none in the world. Vancouver has 18 miles of beaches and over 2700 acres (11 sq. km) of parks.
From your home-away-from-home in Vancouver, you can spend the morning on the beach, the afternoon on the slopes, on the water sailing or scaling the face of "The Chief" in Squamish and be back in time for dinner and cocktails or to take in a performance at one of the many venues featuring live theatre, or one of the many genres of music - live. Classical, pop, rock, hip-hop, jazz.
There are many attractions easily accessible from any area of the city: the Vancouver Museum, Science World, Maritime Museum, Art Gallery, Aquarium, Space Centre, and the renowned Botanical Gardens and Classical Chinese Garden. Your home-away-from-home location also puts you within easy distance of an outdoor wonderland – whale watching, white water sports, mountain biking on the famous North Shore trails, and, of course, fabulous winter sports.
