ALL ABOUT FREMANTLE
HISTORY OF FREMANTLE Fremantle, set on the Indian Ocean, is one of the world's best examples of a Victorian Port. Fremantle was declared a city in 1829. The city was named after Sir Charles Howe Fremantle who, as the captain of the "HMS Challenger", took possession of the West Coast of Australia as British territory. Settlers soon followed in the "Parmelia" and established the Swan River Colony. Aboriginals occupied this land for thousands of years before it was taken over by settlers. You can learn much about their history, heritage and culture by visiting the Fremantle Museums. Fremantle experienced rapid growth in the "goldrush" years, bringing new business to the port, making it a thriving community. AMERICAS CUP: In 1983 Fremantle became a major tourist destination after Alan Bond's Australia II yacht won the Americas Cup. The Americans had been unbeaten for 132 years and, by winning The Cup, this made Fremantle the place to be. Fremantle was a hive of excitement and every day was like New Years Day. Businesses thrived and the local people developed a new sense of pride in their port city, which still remains today.

THE PEOPLE OF FREMANTLE: Fremantle is full of cultural diversity. The multicultural Fremantle people bring with them a cosmopolitan flavour to the city. This is what attracts people from far and wide to Fremantle. The relaxed cosmopolitan lifestyle of Fremantle can be seen in full swing daily on the "cappuccino strip" and during the many festivals of Fremantle.
