Additional information
History of Cattail Creek:
To be able to enjoy these magnificent mountains, the roaring and sometimes babbling Cattail Creek, the shiny flakes of mica which enhance our hikes we must recognize the vision of Percy and Ethel Threadgill
Our Grandparents, Percy and Ethel Threadgill came to Yancey County in 1925 with a dream of buying property “as far back in the woods as one could get” Grandfather found 5000 acres of land he later called Cattail Creek. The land contained nine peaks over 6,000 feet, being the loftiest mountains east of the Mississippi River. This marked the beginning of 4 generations of our family to enjoy a wealth of family heritage. Because of the depression in the 30’s our Grandfather had to come up with great plans for this property or he would lose it. They set out to create a unique vacation community of quiet, natural beauty to share with others. Despite years of struggle with primitive equipment Percy created the ultimate in a mountain vacation community. His vision, perseverance and labor made it possible for us to share with you the unique, peaceful and natural beauty of Cattail Creek.
In 1989 the national Geographic committee gave the name “Percy’s Peak” to a mountain near Mt Celo, elevation 6,500 feet.
